When you know what to do, but don’t actually do it

Most of us can list several things in our life that we want to change. Over time, these areas often come up for us again and again. Sadly, more often than not, nothing changes. In fact, we stay exactly the same.

Why?

It’s not that we don’t know what to do. Ask anyone who has tried to lose weight what they need to do to get there. They will probably say things like reduce portion size, or cut carbs and sugar, or skip dessert, or stop snacking or exercise regularly.

It’s not that we don’t know what to do, we just don’t actually do it.

We have the information, but the knowledge we have hasn’t fused into our being in a way that has changed who we are.

There’s a three step process to integrate knowledge of any form into your life in a way that it becomes part of your essence and being.

  • Step #1 involves the MIND.
First you have to clarify the knowledge or become consciously aware of it. You may already know a lot of facts and information that you learned about or heard somewhere. You may be able to answer questions about a certain topic or relay information to someone else. But until you become intentionally aware of this knowledge as it relates to a change you want to make, it is much harder to integrate it into your daily life. So if you want to lose weight or become a more patient parent, for example, you have to clarify the exact steps you want to follow to reach your goal. You need to become consciously aware of what you need to do to get there.
  • Step #2 involves the HEART.
Once you are aware of the knowledge you wish to integrate, now you have to internalize the information. It has to become so deeply ingrained in who you are that it permeates everything that you do. You are no longer just trying to lose X amount of pounds. You are a person who doesn’t eat dessert after meals. Or maybe you are a person who exercises three times a week. You are not just going to the gym on Tuesday. Exercise is now part of who you are. Or you are not just a mom who didn’t lose her temper today. You are a mom who regularly manages her mind.

These first two steps essentially create an identity shift. There is knowledge that is most likely already within you, but that information has to travel from your brain to your heart. It has to change who you are in order for you to change permanently. You have to see yourself as someone new in order to become that person.

  • Step #3 involves COMMITMENT.
Once you have clarified and internalized your goal, now you have to go ALL IN. This is the part where you have to fully commit. This is where the blood, sweat, and tears come in. You have to be willing to make sacrifices and struggle and leave your comfort zone. You can do this on your own. It’s not easy, but it can be done. It takes time and effort. Or you can get someone to help you. Someone who can help you see the things you don’t always see. Someone who can help you not only become aware of the steps you need to take, but also help you see all the obstacles standing in your way. That someone can be a friend, a mentor, a parent, and a coach among others.

As a life coach, this is what I do. While I might teach you some cool tools that you may not have previously known, my main job is to help you internalize what you already do know. I help you bring your innate wisdom from your brain to your heart so that it permeates every inch of you and transforms your whole life.
